What size is a standard solid surface sheet?
Sizes vary by brand, but a typical solid surface sheet is around 3.65m long and 76cm wide, which is enough for a standard countertop run. Some ranges also come in wider formats for islands, reception desks, and wall cladding, so fewer joints are needed. Check sheet dimensions early in the design. A layout that’s just slightly larger than one sheet can add a seam that a small design change would avoid.
What's the difference between solid surface manufacturers, suppliers, and fabricators?
They play different roles, although some companies do more than one. Solid surface manufacturers produce the raw sheets and cast items such as basins. Suppliers or distributors sell those sheets on. Fabricators cut, bond, thermoform, and install the finished pieces. A company that handles both production and fabrication can control quality from the sheet to the finished counter, and you deal with one point of contact when something needs fixing.
Can sheets from different brands be mixed in one project?
It’s best not to. Every brand formulates its own colors, and even two shades that look identical on a sample can look different side by side on a large installation. Joint adhesives also match each brand’s resin chemistry. Bonding sheets from two brands together can produce weak or visible seams. For a consistent result, use one brand and one product line for each continuous surface.
What technical documents should I request for a project?
Ask for the product’s technical data sheet. It covers density, flexural strength, water absorption, heat performance, and recommended fabrication methods. Hygiene or food-contact certifications matter for hospitals, labs, and commercial kitchens. Many consultants require these documents for material submittals before approving a material, and reliable solid surface manufacturers can provide them straight away.
Can I buy sheets and have them fabricated by my own carpenter?
You can, but solid surface isn’t worked like wood or MDF. It needs carbide tooling, color-matched adhesive, specific clamping methods, and careful sanding to finish the seams. Joints done badly can crack or show clearly. Some warranties also only cover work done by trained fabricators. If you’re sourcing a solid surface sheet for in-house fabrication, check that the team has done this kind of work before.
